The Domain Precinct of Melbourne, Australia, is at once chic, historic, urban and affluent.

A sought-after part of South Yarra, an in-city suburb about 4 kilometers from the central business district, the tree-lined area is made up of “a large variety of heritage style and terrace homes that bring a wonderful character,” says Robert Fletcher of Private Properties Global.

The rows of classic terrace homes are individually owned attached houses increasingly prized for their location. They are “tightly held,” according to Fletcher.

“There is a very high demand for this style of home,” he says. “The market is highly undersupplied.”

While maintaining Domain Precinct’s architectural heritage, many of these Victorian and Edwardian-era homes have been updated for modern living. One such home is listed by Private Properties Global at 68 Toorak Road West.

“The current owner has conducted a full renovation ensuring she retained the period features,” Fletcher says, while “bringing the home’s luxury appeal into 2023.”

The interplay of past and present is evident from the first glimpse of the timeless Victorian. Wrought-iron scrolling along the façade and veranda create a backdrop for a contemporary front garden. A stained-glass window tops the gleaming black front door and tiled stoop.

The elegant ambiance continues indoors where the well-proportioned rooms and ornate fixtures of an earlier era are now integrated into brighter, more functional spaces. Rooms have been opened up and done in finishes and hues that wed contemporary sensibilities with classic tastes.

Tall windows cloaked with sheers bring light into the dining area. A stately fireplace, crown molding, high baseboards and wide-plank wood floors are among other details.

Another fireplace and built-ins grace the adjoining living room.

The marble kitchen features a long island, brass accents and a farmhouse-style sink. It opens to a patio courtyard for al fresco dining.

The primary bedroom is en suite and includes walk-in closets. There are two additional bedrooms and a total of two bathrooms.

“South Yarra draws many downsizers from large family estates as well as young purchasers who love the vibrancy” Fletcher says. “You can walk to the city, arts and sporting precinct.”

The home is also within walking of the Melbourne Cricket Ground and several schools. Nearby are the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria and Fawkner Park, with sports fields and walking paths.

Fletcher is representing the house along with Private Property Global’s Michael Gibson. The asking price is AUD 4.95 million or about USD $3.22 million.
