Former President Donald Trump got some unwelcome news in a new poll this week: 53% of Americans say they would definitely not support him if he’s the GOP nominee, and another 11% say they probably would not back him in November 2024.
The same Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research polling shows that the former president still has strong backing in his own party. Among Republicans, 63% say they want Trump to run again — up from the 55% who said the same thing in April, when he began facing a series of criminal charges.

The poll results come ahead of the first GOP candidates’ debate in Milwaukee on Aug. 23 — an event that Trump hasn’t confirmed he’ll attend. Ron DeSantis comes in a distant second with nearly 15%. Trump’s campaign blasted out the RealClearPolitics survey and other polls in an email on Thursday.
The AP-NORC poll was conducted before Trump was charged late Monday in Georgia in an indictment accusing him and 18 others of conspiring to overturn presidential election results in that state in 2020.
Two other polls released this week show President Joe Biden and Trump competitive in a 2024 matchup, with Biden edging Trump by just a point in surveys from Marist and Quinnipiac.
